First held as a non-ranking event in 2015, the World Grand Prix became a professional ranking tournament in 2016. The first edition was staged at Cymru in Llandudno, Wales. The tournament is held in Preston, England with its latest being staged at Cheltenham in England in 2019. The total prize fund of the tournament is £375,000.
The top 32 ranked professionals are drawn against each other on the basis of World Grand Prix list which is based on the one-year ranking list.
In the rounds of last 32 and last 16, matches are played over the best of 7 frames.
In quarter-finals, the matches are played over best of 9 frames which are increased further in semi-finals, where the matches are played over best of 11 frames.
In the final, the match is played over best of 19 frames.
