Welsh Open is a professional ranking tournament that was established in 1992. Before that, it was known as Welsh Professional Championship in which only Welsh players were allowed to compete.
The tournament was originally played at Newport Centre at Newport until it was moved to Cardiff. It now takes place at Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales under the organization of World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association.
Since the commencement of this format of the tournament, Mark Williams is the only Welsh player to have won this tournament.
John Higgins, a professional snooker player has won it for a record five times followed by Ronnie O' Sullivan with four titles to his name and then, the legendary Stephen Hendry who has won it three times.
